Lord Murugan statue, Batu Caves

The main deity at Batu Caves is Lord Murugan. Lord Murugan is popular with Tamil Hindus. Murugan is considered to be a son of Parvati and Shiva along with his brother Ganesha and his sisters Saraswati and Lakshmi.

He is known by many other names, including Guhan or Guruhuha which means 'cave-dweller'.

There are several temples dedicated to Lord Murugan in Malaysia. The most famous is the Batu Caves temple near Kuala Lumpur. The Sri Mariamman Temple was established in 1891.

There is a 42.7 m-high statue of Lord Murugan at the base of the steps. It is the largest Lord Murugan statue in the world. It was unveiled in January 2006, having taken 3 years to construct.
