Phra Nang Cave, Ao Nang, Krabi

Phra Nang Cave is on a beach of the same name, on the Railay peninsula, off Ao Nang, in Krabi district, S. Thailand.

The cave is dedicated to the Princess Goddess (Phra Nang) and villagers believe her spirit lives in the cave, so they consider the cave to be sacred. Fishermen, before going out to sea, will ask the goddess for good luck. If their wish is fulfilled, they make offerings at the shrine, usually flowers and incense, but also special gifts of linghams.

You can actually climb to the upper chamber of the cave, where there are a few bats.

The cliff outside has many hanging stalactites

There are people selling things on the beach -

2014 update
In 2014 the sex toys were cleared away from the cave. See this report 'Krabi Cave Cleared of Sex Toys' from 27 Oct 2014.

  3. Fascinating. The culture of phallic worship on Krabi is so colourful . In a temple in Japan, a Meiji ink-painting alludes to phallic worship in raunchier way is designated a national treasure. The problem is conserving this Krabi Collection.

  5. Hopefully the Krabi collection of phalluses will be preserved as the locals treat the place as a sacred place, and hopefully the tourists will respect this. The fisherman are adding to the collection all the time, and there are certainly more items there now than there was on my visit in 2002.
